WOYWW dyeing for art

The latest lesson over at Wanderlust is about making your own "inks", using "natural" ingredients, to use in your art journal or similar. As well as the usual tea and coffee, I also tried chamomile tea, red onion skins, brown onion skins, oriental lilies and blueberries! All very interesting and, naturally, this has piqued my interest in dyeing wool and fabric, something I dabbled in ages ago and would like to do again. (Watch this space.) Anyway, up close with some of the handmade "inks" ...

and the desk ... chaotic, as always ...

The double page has been "painted" with the blueberry ink and the bits and pieces on the left in shades of pinkish/red/blue are all dyed with the blueberry ink as well! Weird, eh?

Hope to catch you in the next few days via Julia's Stamping Ground.

  1. This is an art many of us have forgotten. We had one lady locally who dyed her fibres and grew plants specifically for dying.

Some very nice colours there, well done.

  3. Loving the colours you achieved. So far I've only ever tried tea and coffee staining, but now I feel I should really experiment with other things! Happy WOYWW! zsuzsa #22

  4. OMgosh. I hadn't thought about making your own inks. I've tried dyeing cross stitch fabric with natural ingredients but that's about it. They look beautiful. It would be great to try in summer.

  7. That is amazing how different the blueberry tones are! Did you use different papers or something and was it the same batch of ink? I had a go at natural dyeing with some Wool once - it all came out a rather mucky shade of brown, lol!

  9. The colours are lovely and they all tone in beautifully. I have a neighbour who is always looking at how to dye fibres. Wanderlust has been good value by the look of all the interesting things you have created. Looking forward to lunch and show and tell. :)
